Title: More Syria stuff.
Post by: Anchorman on September 07, 2015, 09:38:00 PM
This is quite disturbing....

Any combination involving Murdoch, the Golan Heights, Oil and Israel should get alarm bells ringing.

Whilst I would agree with your "Any combination involving Murdoch, the Golan Heights, Oil and Israel should get alarm bells ringing" comment, Jim, would also regard any single such report with kid gloves.  Just where on the Israeli and international political spectrum does MEE lie?.

If there had been only one news source for this, Hope, it would be suspect.
However, here's a Reuters report:

Thanks for that, Jim.  When I did a Google search for Genie before I posted my last post, my browser decided to go AWOL.  It took me several attempts to get it back working properly.

First of all, Israel occupied then annexed the Golan Heights because Syria was using that area to fire their weapons down on and killing innocent farmers in Israel. Twenty years ago Israel halted plans to explore for oil up there in the hopes that Syria would come to the table and talk. Nope, they weren't interested. Israel cooperates with some rebels, well big hairy deal, who doesn't except maybe the Butcher of Damascus.
Israel's neighbours don't seem so upset about it. Israel has a huge natural gas field off shore and I know Jordan's ready to buy and Egypt might buy Israel's natural gas to resell if it's profitable for them to do so. Egypt was going to buy from Israel for themselves but the have made a huge natural gad discovery themselves.

Now cooperating with some rebels, why not if the rebels are controlling area near the Golan? AND of course Israel continues to quietly aid Syrian refugees and has been doing so for over three years. But no, this is about bashing Israel for looking for some oil on land that was used to launch murderous attacks on their farmers. Whatever.

First of all, Israel occupied then annexed the Golan Heights because Syria was using that area to fire their weapons down on and killing innocent farmers in Israel land stolen from Palestinians.

It would be nice if it were as clear-cut as you suggest, but it really, really isn't.

And now it's Israel who won't discuss the situation in the occupied territories... no-one in the region is covering themselves in glory.

Hang on:
Are you saying Israel is correct in ignoriing the UN, UN Security Council, and u
international law in occupying land which is clearly defined under international law as belonging to another state?
Great!
So I'll have half of Canada, please.
Since international law counts for nothing, there would be nothing wrong in invading half of Canad and planting my flag there?

Whether you support a state of Israel - and I do - there is no justification for flouting international law.

Sorry, just to check, is that supposed to be 'flag' or 'flange'?

Anchorman, if I was using Canadian territory to launch attacks on you, then to bad for me if you took that territory from me.
To be real, Egypt had massed it's troops along the Israeli border in Sinai. Forcing Israel to attack and wipe out that threat. Nasser, the liar that he was, told Jordan and Syria that Egypt was winning against Israel and to launch their own attacks against Israel. Well we know what happened. Israel removed those threats as well. No more attacks on Israeli farmers from the Golan Heights. Israel has been quietly aiding Syrian refugees for over three years.

Course that's all water under the bridge. Jordan and Egypt don't mind Israel having the Golan Heights. They might make some noise for show but they are getting along quite well with that Evil Israel.

One other fact from history. Israel plead with the UN to do something to stop Syria from raining missiles down from the Golan Heights but nothing was done that stopped Syria's murderous behavior. So much for the UN, Israeli relationship.

Well I would break your blessed international law in a heart beat, if it prevented you from murdering my people.

So how do you feel about Russia stealing the Crimea and waging that proxy war in Ukraine? What were you saying about international law?

Israel looking for oil in territory it justly took to protect it's people doesn't hold outrage for me. Now what about the international laws being broken today all across Syria and Iraq? Oh no wait, Israel took the Golan Heights from a enemy. Another fact about this, also in 1967, the Israeli cabinet had voted in favour of returning the Golan to Syria in exchange for a peace agreement.  A big thanks to the Khartoum resolution for insuring that offer was rejected.

Well I would break your blessed international law in a heart beat, if it prevented you from murdering my people.

In which case you would support Arabs breaking international law to prevent their people from being murdered by Israelis in 1948? Or even Arabs breaking international law in Syria today to "prevent" their people being murdered today?

According to state archives opened in 1980, testimony from former Israeli soldiers and also Palestinians, Israeli soldiers were murdering Palestinians and ethnically cleansing Palestinian villages at gunpoint to steal the villagers' land for Israeli settlements from November 1947.

"Next week, Zochrot, whose activists include Jews and Palestinians, will connect the bitterly contested past with the hi-tech present. Its I-Nakba phone app will allow users to locate any Arab village that was abandoned during the 1948 war on an interactive map, learn about its history (including, in many cases, the Jewish presence that replaced it), and add photos, comments and data.

It is all part of a highly political and inevitably controversial effort to undo the decades-long erasure of landscape and memory – and, so the hope goes, to build a better future for the two peoples who share a divided land."
