Yup, I heard that at noon today.

Would love to know what happened there. At 81 it's certainly possible that he could still be alive somewhere. As to whether he is ....
-
If there is an afterlife I'm going to spend it finding out the answers to mysteries like this - Lucan, the Princes in the Tower etc.
-
All the evidence (snork) suggests he's gone to live with E.T.

I think you have to be of a certain age to have a clue who he is - and likewise to care.

This is a secret - but I saw him just the other day (recognised the moustache) at the start of the West Highland Way in Milngavie, with rucksack, boots and all the usual kit & caboodle: I'm sure Elvis was with him.
-
Perhaps now we can expect a film about him?
A puppet image of Lucan featured in many Spitting Image episodes, as I remember he was depicted as a barman.

Another well loved icon from the seventies sadly taken from us.

Don't tell me Gordy........you were all shook up?

There was a very good TV drama about Lucan some time ago. Rory Kinnear played Lucan, Christopher Eccleston played John Aspinall and was marvellously arrogant, displaying the sense of entitlement he and his circle shared. Worth watching if you can get hold of it, ITV.

Didn't think either Kinnear or Eccleston were very convincing in that. The former didn't come across as the tall former military aristocrat Lucan was, and as for the latter's attempt at a posh accent ..... The families weren't very happy with it either I believe.

Correction - as of yesterday it should (officially) be "to have a clue who he WAS". Just another of the aristocracy who got caught shagging the nanny and ran rather than face the music!

There was never any suggestion of that going on Owlswing. Since she was murdered, not really in good taste to suggest otherwise in my view.

And the identity of Jack the Ripper. And who was actually involved in the Kennedy assassination. And what happened at the Dyatlov Pass. And how they faked the moon landings ;)

And by whom, pray, do you think she was murdered and why?

Have you read anything about the case? If Lucan did it then it was to do with him gaining custody of his children. The evidence suggests he did personnally or via a third party then fled. Nothing to do with 'shagging the nanny' as you put it. Murdering the nanny perhaps might be a correction but suggesting there was any goings on between Lucan and Sandra Rivett (she does have a name rather than just being the nanny to Lady Lucan and her children) is innacurate, in bad taste and gives no respect to Sandra Rivett. Making such allegations about people, dead or alive, can be a dangerous thing to do of course.

From what I was told, years ago when I worked in a somewhat rarefied environment where people knew about these things (or thought they did), it wasn't him who was shagging the nanny.
In any case, the poor girl died. There's no excuse for killing someone in cold blood, no matter how provocative the situation. If he had stayed in the country and faced the music, it might have been considered a crime of passion.
Maeght, I take your point about Christopher Eccleston's accent, I thought as much when I watched the programme but after a while I didn't notice it because it seemed, to me, that he captured the essence of John Aspinall perfectly. I don't know much about Lucan so can't judge Kinnear on his accuracy, it seemed alright to me at the time. Families are bound to object to portrayals of their loved ones in drama. I am more sympathetic towards the nanny's family.

Lucan was tall, had military bearing, was charismatic and was asked to audition for the role of James Bond at one point I believ. Although Kinnear gave a decent performance I don't think it was an accurate portrayal of Lucan - but never met him of course.
I do think it is sad that Sandra Rivett is almost forgotten in the story, being referred to as 'the nanny' is an example. Her family certainly deserve a lot of sympathy, as does Lady Lucan who suffered a horrible assault. As you say, there is no excuse for cold blooded murder no matter what and trying to use it as some dig at the aristocracy is in poor taste.

You see it your way and I will see it mine.
Neither of us can prove our view one way or 'tother.
And, to be perfectly honest, I really couldn't give a damn as anyone who knew anything kept their traps shut for fear of what the aristocracy and their minions could do to anyone who spoke out!

What nonsense. Do you actually know anything about the case or are you just spouting off due to anti aristocracy feelings?
Your way of seeing it is not based on any evidence or facts. Just be big enough to say you don't know anything about it and have made a mistake.

Don't disagree with that.

Very grown up.

Very grown up.
Growing old is inevitable;
Growing up is optional;
If you haven't grown up by 50 - don't bother.
I'm sorry, Maeght, but to me the Lucan case is ancient history. In all probability the truth of it will never ever be known. Why the Hell there had to such a splash about the re-granting of a Death Certificate is beyond me.
The nanny, Ms Sandra Rivett, has been and forever will be denied any sort justice as will her family be denied closure.
Lady Lucan and her progeny will possibly know exactly what happened and, if they do, will, in all probability, never make it public; and if they don't the situation will remain as it has for the last 42 years - all speculation and conspiracy theory.
As you will be well aware the aristocracy at that time were far, far, less accountable for their actions than they are now and, because of that, we, mere mortals, are not considered, even today, to be worth the telling of whatever the truth might or might not be.

I would certainly agree with the much of that. There is absolutely no suggestion though that Lucan and Sandra Rivett were having a sexual relationship (she was nanny to his children but this was after he had moved out into a flat of his own and was not living at the family home). It is quite clear that Lucan was driven to try to get custody of his children and this was his main obsession and is the most likely reason for the terrible series of events, so your comment was inaccurate and, in my view, inappropriate. It seems however that you aren't willing to go as far as to recognise that or even accept the possibility. A shame, but never mind.

I got as far as the patronising "a more 'grown up' response" and left it there!

Okay - I've modified my post to remove that since you found it inappropriate. I will repeat however that there is absolutely no suggestion though that Lucan and Sandra Rivett were having a sexual relationship - that to have suggested they were was inaccurate and inappropriate, to have referred to Ms Rivett simply as 'the nanny' reflects how she has almost been forgotten as an individual in this case, and to have appeared to have used this sad murder as some opportunity to have a dig at the aristocracy is in poor taste. I'll leave it at that I think.

42 years ago I was living in Australia and the newspapers out there were not so cowed by the British upper classes as British papers were (? are), and the speculation about a sexual relationship was rife in Australian papers. There were several attempts via the Australian courts to have such comments and suggestions legally censored; all of which failed on the ground that the courts decided that if there was nothing to the rumours and speculatiun such censorship would be unnecessary.
Such relationships between the aristos and members of their staff was, as far as Aussies of the time were concerned, a continual and hidden social reality right through from Victorian times.

What about Elvis.
We know about Elvis. They found him on the bog. We don't need to go and watch.
The mystery is how he lived so long. For most people the fatal dose of those banana fritters would be about 3.

And then there's the fried peanut butter sandwiches ... and then there's the prescription drugs.
I remember hearing years ago that the DEA made the largest ever drugs haul in the entire history of the United States - they dug Elvis up.
-
What I was told was that Ms Rivett was having a relationship with Lady Lucan and Lord Lucan caught them at it. It's so many years ago, I no longer know (or care) whether or not I believe it but I did at the time because of the credibility of the people who told me. That was hushed up of course and Lucan's friends made sure he got away.
A crime of passion if it was true but I doubt anyone wanted to make it public.
Anyway he spent many years in exile, hopefully he was able to see his children at times and he is now dead so may he rest in peace.
-
........... he is now dead so may he rest in peace.
He has been declared legally dead, he could still be alive!
-
True. Who cares, really?

What is your fixation with Sandra Rivett?
It is almost as if she was a relative or friend of yours.
(edited for typo) (again!)

I don't want to speak for anyone else but it seems to me that referring to Sandra Rivett as "The nanny" (I have been guilty of that), rather than using her name, is somewhat disrespectful, especially as we speak of others by name. It's almost as though she has been forgotten yet she is the victim.

I'd have thought that that stems simply from not knowing her name. Anybody even minimally familiar with the Lucan case knows that he supposedly killed the nanny; yet I strongly suspect a straw poll would reveal very, very few indeed who know what the nanny's name was.

I certainly didn't until Maeght posted it.

Strange how Lord Lucan disappeared about the time that Freddy Mercury cut his hair short and grew a tash.
Just saying.
