It is a brilliant opportunity to drink beer and make ribald comments on the referee's eyesight!

Vicarious ego fulfilment when the supported team/person wins, appreciation of skills and tactics, belonging to a like minded group, the atmosphere of anticipation, learning how to improve you own skills and resolve might be a few reasons.

I remember some time back a football team manager whose team was having a bad run what he thought would get the team back on track.
He said that he needed to get, as a player/manager, a bloke who could play every single position of the field, from center-forward to goalie, was a qualified sports physician, and aslo was a qualified sports psychologist. He then said that the only problem with this solution was being able to get the fat beer-swilling sod of his arse on the sofa in front of the TV.

This!
I don't get much enjoyment out of watching sport on my own, but get a gang of friends together with some beers and it becomes a great excuser for a social occasion.

Loads of reasons.
I mostly watch football and F1. Love the skill of both. The drama. Sharing it with my son and my dad.
What it boils down to is escapism. None of it matters in the slightest yet it can feel like the most important thing in the world.

Good question. Until 10 or so years ago, I didn't like watching sport that much; I was too keen in taking part. Unfortunately, as my fitness and health has deteriorated, so I have spent more time watching it.
