Why do we have to wait until a holiday period to see some really good older films on tv? Anyone's guess.
This morning there was a film from 1972 with Diana Dors in the role of an elderly, very unpleasant, husband-beating woman. Her make-up applied to make her appear ugly, warts and all. I didn't even recognise her and was agog when her name appeared in the credits at the end of the film.
She was excellent in the role. I'm not sure many on this board will remember Diana as she was an actress from the '60s and '70s. But she is usually known for her role in sex-comedy films and for her risqué modelling. Incidentally, Wiki has a page, as long as your arm, on her.
Elsewhere, at the moment, 'The Fall of the Roman Empire' from 1964 is on BBC2. Cast includes: Alec Guinness; Omar Sharif; James Mason; Sophia Loren; Christopher Plummer and more. An absolute treat.
And, in case you're wondering, I don't normally spend all day watching, telly.... lol! Wish I had the time! No, no..... this is a one off! :D

The wasteland that is Saturday night TV could be easily improved if they showed half-decent films!

I remember Diana Dors very well, even so far back as the 1950s when I was a child. She was an excellent actress and won an award at drama school but her appearance type cast her. Nevertheless she had some good roles, notably she played a woman on death row who was eventually hanged. I saw that on TV a few years back and it was harrowing.
Diana had some success in the USA as a cabaret artiste, during her marriage to the British comedian, Dicky Davies. She came home when her marriage broke up and worked wherever work was available, she was a true 'grafter'.
Lovely woman, a TV biopic was made about her starring Amanda Redman as the adult and older Diana (can't remember who played her when she was younger). If it is shown again I recommend it. She led a colourful and interesting life and touched many people with her love and kindness, an extremely popular person.

Just to say, if SweetPea or others are interested, that the TV biopic of Diana Dors starring Keeley Hawes as the young Diana and Amanda Redman as the older, is being shown on TV3 Monday night (1st May) at 10pm. I hope to watch it again, enjoyed it very much the first time.

Hi Brownie, I forgot about this thread. Thanks for your input, though. Didn't Diana marry Richard (Dickie) Dawson at some point, Dickie Davies is the sports presenter, isn't he.
I missed the programme you mentioned but will see if I can find it on iPlayer. Keeley Hawes, for me, is an Oscar winning actress. Have you been watching The Durrells on a Sunday evening? Wonderful stuff. Love Keeley's work.

It was very good to see the film again, the second part is Monday night.
Yes I like Keeley Hawes very much too, she is so versatile. I have missed the Durrells unfortunately (and some other series I wanted to watch). I put the first one on but other things got in the way. I'll see it when it comes around again.

Hang-on a mo, Trippy, I'll have to google..... can't find anything. The film I mentioned above was actually a children's 'fantasy'. Diana played the part of a child-hating, husband-beating woman in a kind-of wicked witch sense. Title of the film... The Amazing Mr. Blunden.

Yes I remember now but I'm still pretty sure she did a similar character in that 1980s TV series TOTU.
Thriller may well be it but what about
