A friend from Toronto sent me this note last night.
"What amazes me as I continue to watch your current presidential season from up here in Canada is just how far off the rails presidential politics has travelled. I am startled that, as a country well north of 300 million people and one as rich and as storied as yours, you couldn't find a way to nominate even one unambiguously deserving candidate, even one unsullied by either legal controversy, demonstrable ignorance and crudity, or both.
That both Ms Clinton and Mr Trump can find themselves positioned on the threshold of the White House today must be a triumph of what can only be an electoral process that has, over the years, become increasingly corrupted by money. Any country whose leader can only be elected after the expenditure of BILLIONS of dollars is one with a dangerously tenuous hold on democratic principles. My sense is that someone with a fertile mind and enlightened ideas but living in obscurity would be a much better candidate than either of the two currently on offer. That your country would settle for anything less than the best should be of great concern to Americans; it really IS of great concern to the rest of the world"

Not met a lot of people, then, your friend?

It is a typically Canadian attitude though; Canada is geographically close to the USA but polls apart in other respects.

Virtually EVERY other respect.

It is a fact that though Canadians are often critical and mocking of America, Canada does benefit greatly from it's southern neighbour.

And those to the South do not?
Of course not, the South is Latin, the North European, in origin.

What I mean is that some Canadians seem to get a bit self-righteous. They seem to think that they have the moral 'high ground' - when the fact is that Canada is doing very nicely from it's relationship with America.
The relationship is somewhat different between USA and Latin America - largely because of the wealth disparity.

Compared to the USA I should say that they do.

I think the general rule is that if you believe you are superior to someone else - then you almost certainly are not.

In general I would agree, but where the US is concerned the UK is definitely superior! :D

And those who live in Welsh Wales are the 'superiorist' of all? ;D

And to prove it they are attempting to resurrect a dead language :)

That ship sailed long ago - if the measure of a living language is that people speak it in their everyday lives, in broadcasting, trade and commerce or just in conversation down the pub, Welsh (like Irish) is very much alive.
-
Yup and I'm all for it. I like the sound of Welsh and if I could speak it, I could have conversations that no-one would understand. Make sense of that if you can!

Ah well we don't live in the Welsh Wales bit of Wales, that is much further to the East of us.

Ah, the real Britons, before the Italians, followed by the Germans, the Norwegians, the Danes and the French poured in, taking all their jobs and robbing them of their benefits. ;)
-
Definitely, not to mention the Native Americans who migrated to Wales and spawned many Madocs.
