Thoughts?
What other flags could be flown by a council?
-
Here is an extract:
"Abingdon-on-Thames Town Council voted against the motion to fly the flag from the town's county hall next June in support of Oxford Pride.
Oxford Pride chairman Robert Jordan accused the council of "backward" thinking and said it showed inequality.
The council said flying the rainbow flag would set a "clear precedent" for other flags to be flown in the town."
No thoughts really, it appears the Council think that all and sundry will be wanting them to fly flags if they allow this one, or any other. If you think about it, the EDL could demand a flag if they had a big rally in the town (not likely in Oxford, just an example).
The Council have given their reasons and unless anyone has evidence to the contrary, I don't read anything sinister into it; there's nothing to stop those taking part in Pride from carrying rainbow banners and flags.
(Was thinking a couple of days ago how the H subject hasn't been raised for a while on here and how refreshing it was to have subjects other than people's sexual orientation, even if it had been replaced by the EU ref.; I thought too soon, didn't dream you'd be the one to bring it up, albeit obliquely, again Hope.)

I have to say I'm with the council on this one. I don't see any reason why Gay Pride should get special treatment as compared to all the other groups that want to run events in Abingdon.

It has been brought up by several posters over the past week or so in regard to the Tory leadership campaign. I've tried to avoid the issue, but thought it would be interesting to test this on the board. Like you, I don't see anything 'sinistre' in the decision, but I can foresee disagreement.

H: "It has been brought up by several posters over the past week or so in regard to the Tory leadership campaign"
I haven't seen it before today, it was mentioned on another thread in connection with a possible Tory leader, but will take your word for it.
