Title: Plans for the Summer and beyond
Post by: Aruntraveller on July 06, 2016, 12:25:27 PM
As an antidote (hopefully) to all the referendum and Brexiting talk I thought it might be an idea to focus on things that people have planned for enjoyment to lighten the mood.

I, for instance, am going away to Germany in the summer to explore the Rhine from a base in Koblenz - we'll be taking in some wine (no doubt) and the DB railway museum - yes I am taking an anorak. The reason for the visit; aside from the fact that I really enjoy visiting Germany and find it a fascinating and beautiful country; is that I am celebrating a certain birthday this year - needless to say it has a zero at the end and I also find my thoughts turning increasingly to retirement. No more clues.

What have others got planned for enjoyment?

As long as I can stick to my normal routines that is what makes me content. I have never enjoyed holidays.

You can do the work for me and I'll just holiday. I'd happily travel the world continually and would do so were it not for my parents being hugely inconsiderate in not giving me an enormous trust fund.

I don't like them either floo, much prefer being at home.  However the occasional short break somewhere peaceful and interesting has appeal, as long as I can relax.

The last time I went away for a few days was to Antwerp and I did have a good time there, it was lovely.

Some holidays in the past have left pleasant memories but, on the whole, I find them stressful and look forward to getting back home.   It's nice that I no longer feel obliged to book something.  I am delighted other people enjoy holidays though, something to look forward to and a break from the working life.

Trent - I used to holiday near Koblenz, little place called Andernach.   Very nice indeed.   I remember going down on the train from Koln,  and the castles along the Rhine, amazing really.

I think my first holiday, when I was two put me off for life! In those days the planes weren't pressurised, and we had to put cotton wool in our ears and suck a barley sugar provided by the airhostess. I remember  being very sick! Subsequent holidays  were no fun either. Obviously we have been on many over the years ensuring our kids had educational trips, which were so important for their learning. I used to go back to my home island every year, but haven't been for three years. My passport has expired.

As mentioned elsewhere I think, I have already been to Perth and Adelaidde to visit people. With the two families I stayed with I renewed friendship with at least 23 members of the extended families. Weather a bit chilly but that didn't matter.
It was a bit tricky organising the pill taking, but I just kept my watch on British time and took them, more or less, at twelve-hour intervals! :)

And now that I've started to do a bit of travelling again, I will be doing a bit of visiting family in the north in august..

I shall be spending the best part of a couple of months in my little French house in Aquitaine.

My wife and I bought it to retire to but she was diagnosed with cancer a year later. We did spend several summers there before she died. It was ours - and that it why it is special for me.

I shall be doing what passes for DIY maintenance. I shall be enjoying myself with my friends. I shall be taking day trips out with my camera. And I shall be spending time on my computer making certain that I do not miss the craziness that is this forum.

My wife and I are off to Carnac in Brittany in the morning for ten days in a static caravan. Hopefully, nice and relaxing by the beach and pool with a bit of touring. I really want to see the U Boat base at Lorient.

Work - at least until late August.  My wife and I may try to get away sometime in September.

It sounds lovely. Somewhere my wife and I could happily retire to when/if we reach that age.

Sorry to here of your loss but I am pleased that it is still special to you.

Out of interest, is there anything in particular that you like to photograph?

I've still got two music festivals to visit this summer. I'm pondering the idea of visiting Prague again too.

We drove there quite a number of years ago with some German friends. We went into the tourist office and they found us accommodation in Hotel Albatross: which turned out to be a boat moored on the river - great times!

Make sure you sample lots of beer - it's really good!

I am building a repertoire of talks about France and French life that I can give to groups like U3A, WI, Probus and so on, so the photographs are useful presentation material.

.... And I like the photographs as reminders of places that I have visited and liked - just like anyone else, I suppose. Although I don't do selfies ....
