You did right to speedily exitt!
That is a horrific story. However it does happen sometimes that a very prem baby is considered dead and put to one side.
There was an incidence of that happening in 'Call the Midwife', written about in one of Jennifer Worth's very frank books about her time as a midwife in the East end. She had delivered the baby which was premature and unbelievably tiny, everyone thought he was dead, and put him in a kidney dish while she saw to the mother. However she rescued him before it was too late and between the efforts of her and his mother, mainly the latter, the baby survived and grew, thank goodness.
Unfortunately not everyone has that individual attention.

Some things are beyond sad, and this is one of them.

I know that in days gone by, there was a lack of sensitivity in that (and many a-nother), particular area.
Now, if a mother loses a baby that is a recognisable baby as in this case, she and father are allowed to see the baby, hold him/her and have him alongside for a while. In the past they were just taken away, end of. Grieving was very difficult.
In this case, of course, the baby was still alive, even more appropriate for the mother to spend time with him before he died, poor little scrap.
A&E is a very busy place at times, I daresay most of the attention was on the mother; the baby wouldn't have deliberately been put aside had they thought it was alive.
