Title: Attacking victims of sexual abuse
Post by: Nearly Sane on November 29, 2016, 11:11:48 AM
This attack by Eric Bristow is hugely disappointing nowadays.

What a creep, you wonder what he has to hide! >:(

Utterly thoughtless of course, but since it seems he has been dropped by Sky as a direct result he'll have more time (and less money) to consider his thoughtlessness.

I for one didn't wonder that.

What do you think that he has to hide?

I will leave that to your imagination!

Now I am wondering what you have to hide.
Is it something that a creep would hide?

So you think making up things are valid accusations?

I nearly posted earlier on this but left it - but just to say I just thought what a mean-spirited, insensitive boor the man appeared to be.

That doesn't mean that anything other can be attributed to him unless you have specific evidence Floo.

It is very dangerous to resort to this type of judgement, as has been demonstrated elsewhere with mistaken identities and this issue.

I didn't make any accusation at all. I only wondered if he had something to hide as his statement was so outrageous.

So you just raised a possibility for which you have no evidence other than making things up.

Ok I have long said that I do not consider myself a Londoner, & that I loathe Cockneys more than do Brummies.

But I liked to think that Bristow's gobby cockney act was all just an act. It seems that it was not. Wanker.

I know we have to roundly condemn his statement, but I cannot help think he is saying what a lot of people are thinking.

And? Widespread dickheadedness is still utter dickheadness.

Because on some level I agree that is the action I personally would take.

It does not make it right, but it is an instinctive reaction.

It might be the action you would take but are you saying you agree with Bristow that it is on to attack the victims for not doing it?

No I do not agree with that at all.

It's a personal decision and I back whatever position the victims take.

Not quite. you may think that is the action you would take.

I think the reality of the situation impacts on people more than we perhaps realize. The levels of self hatred and denial are aspects that people more qualified than most of us do talk about frequently when referring to abused people. To think they would react in a certain way is to my mind slightly ignoring the trauma they have been through and the ongoing issues they clearly face.

I don't think people are thinking that: I think most people are appalled that Bristow chose to attack the victims, bearing that at the time of the abuse these victims were young people who were being abused by an authority figure.

Bristow deserves all the flak he gets.

So therefore the point about any number of people agreeing with Bristow is for what? Since as the thread title and article makes clear, the attack on the victims is the problem.

Good!

It was a sneering, arrogant comment that showed his gross ignorance (quite out of the blue, I wonder if he was a Brexiter or UKIP supporter?).

Probably something to do with the traditional belief that 'real men' dealt with their problems themselves.  Less prevalent now, but still adhered to by sections of society.

I saw it a different way;  that 'real men' would not be pestered by a man!
Except they weren't men when they were abused, they were boys.

Whatever he meant it was insensitive in the extreme.

I wonder what he would say if it was girls who were abused by a sports coach?  Not 'real women' perhaps or 'they asked for it running around in those gym shorts, showing their legs'?

Yeuch.

Floo, what I wondered was whether he had suffered the same type of abuse as a child, and had either dealt with it it himself, or was still too traumatised by it and felt he had to appear to be coping.

Yes quite.

Foo is getting all hot and bothered but I reckon I could walk into many pubs and hear people expressing exactly the same kind of sentiments. And before people start banging on about what a sad state our society is in, I would argue that t'was ever thus and we are making progress that a lot of us think these things should not be said and not that he's just a cheeky chappy.
