Blimey!

Tragic, NS.
I will come back later with report of things I read on the same subject (& did not understand at the time), which I read when I was a kid, in encyclopaedica-type books that my unc had in his bookcase.
Thank goodness times have changed!
-
Well I never did!
Otherwise I wouldn't have got to 70, would I? ;)
-
I wouldn't recommend it as a method of suicide.

though it may amount to a petit mort

The worst aspect of this, I suppose, is that it is developing guilt for a normal, natural and beneficial activity. And by attaching a pseudo-biblical label like "onanism" making masturbation "sinful" and subject to religious control.

Indeed and didn't Mr Kellogg make a big thing out of it (no pun intended)? Enough to put you off your cornflakes.
I remember reading about it, described as 'self abuse', in my uncle's medical encyclopaedia which said the habit caused weakness in the legs, depression and urination problems, and that adults should be alert to signs, such as uncharacteristic quietness and wanting to spend a lot of time alone in room - but it didn't describe exactly what it was young men - and some young women - did. As a child, I was intrigued but couldn't ask anyone.

Masturbation is a normal sexual activity providing it is done in moderation in private. Far better for a young person to engage in that activity than to have sex with another before they are old enough to engage in it in a responsible manner.

Moderation?
who's counting? and thank you for your condescending attitude .

This may well mean nothing to most people but there is an old song from The Band on the Run album by Wings called Mamunia.
I now find myself wandering around singing 'Onania, Onania, whoa, whoa, whoa; Onania Onania....etc'
-
Onania sounds like a fictional world from the pages of C S Lewis. Or an Irish grandmother.

You swine Trent: now I hear it too, and it won't go away, and it's your fault :)

Condescending, what are you on about? I have heard if men masturbate excessively it can cause prostate problems.

Never heard that before. Certainly not on the list supplied by the NHS of probable causes. Nor on the Cancer Research list either. It's not an old wives tale is it?
Still I'll be on here a lot more now I've got all this extra time on my hands.
-
I thought masturbation was beneficial to the prostate. Sexual intercourse leading to ejaculation is good for the gland and masturbation is the alternative if intercourse is not on the cards.
Trent, never let your right hand know what your left is doing.

According to this article excessive masturbation in young men could cause prostate cancer, but might be beneficial in the over 50s!

Yep - and the last para said it all:
Men should not be overly concerned by this research. Sexual functioning is a normal part of healthy adult life. The causes of prostate cancer are not known for certain. Increasing age is the most established risk factor and more research is needed.

does that still apply if someone does it for you ? :o

Floo, I think you are in danger of over-interpreting some rather inconclusive results here. And how does the prostate know the difference between intercourse and masturbation?
