It is interesting to see the number of 'Catholic' countries on the list.

Very good!
Catholics are divided on this, liberals v traditionalists.
Same as other religions, you see the variation in not so United States of America.

(Someone told me a few years ago that Spain legalised s.s. marriage before a lot of other countries.)

Not sure why the article says that Merkel "originally" opposed equal marriage, the word implying that she used to be against it but now isn't. She voted against it last week.

ETA: perhaps it actually meant that she was originally opposed to a free vote on equal marriage, which makes more sense.
