Title: Who?
Post by: wigginhall on July 16, 2017, 05:53:34 PM
At last, the final barrier for women falls!   We've had women doctors, astronauts, and prime ministers, but now a female Dr Who. And she will be terrific, a wonderful actor, Jodie Whittaker.   Be happy.

And she will be terrific
How do you know? She may be a fine actor, but that's no guarantee of being a success in a particular role. Although I do note that the guy who wrote Broadchurch (in which she appears) is taking over as what Americans call "show runner", so perhaps the new era will be a masterpiece.

Again, there's no guarantee though.

Wow. I'd love to have seen some of those taking on the role.

Apparently some idiot sexists are upset a woman is at last taking the part! ::) I watched the first episode of the programme, and continued to watch until Tom Baker retired as the Doctor. I didn't think the succeeding actors did a very good job. Lately I think Dr Who has been more suitable for those in their teens and adults rather than younger children.  Hopefully a woman will give the programme a boost.

As others elsewhere on the internet have pointed out.....fans are willing to accept the regeneration process of a character who is immortal along with the frequent ressurrection of foes who have previously been eradicated and yet you cant get to grips with a female lead. Really?

Where are the positive male role models though? Subsumed by a greedy and imperialistic feminism.

Just wondering what Mary Whitehouse would have said? She frothed at the mouth enough to fill a fire extinguisher over the show in the '70's and '80's.

She would be my choice for Dr Who. Cleaning up the Galaxy, destroying the static generators at Channel 4 so all the Tristrams and smut grind to a halt........

A note of caution from The Times this appointment is bad news because the programmes in future will inevitably be much shorter as a "she" will sort problems out more quickly and with less drama!!!  :)

I understand the first episode is entitled ''The Castration Complex''.

Finally, a Dr from Yorkshire.   We've waited a long time for this.   Will she say, 'eeh by gum'?  No.

It is amusing to watch the misogynists and manbabies squeaking and groaning about JW.   Some of them saying, 'I've watched it all my life, but never again', which is probably a lie on both counts.   I'd find it impossible not to watch the first few episodes to see how it is rejigged, plus of course, JW is an excellent actor.

I think as a series, it is prone to staleness, but this should shake it up a bit.   Depends a lot on the scripts of course.

Anything MW didn't like on TV was obviously worth watching! ;D

I have just discovered this, it shows what wonderful judgement that woman had. :o

But Midland watchdog Mary Whitehouse, who set up her Clean Up TV Campaign in Birmingham, and later led the National Viewers and Listeners Association, gave Jimmy Savile an award – to celebrate wholesome family entertainment.

As an aside Trevor Baxter, who in the audio series had much success spinning off from his role in The Talons of Weng-Chiang, has died

Well, it has a bathing room (Tegan Jovanka found that) A swimming pool, a library, and used to have a null entrapy room for that regeneration that went wrong till the Master made sure it was ditched. As for Kitchen? The second episode in 1963 showed Susan showing Ian and Barbra how to use the food replicator and hygene disposal unit. Howzat for geekiness?

Exactly, we're talking about a being with two hearts, that travels through time and space in a police box, armed with a magic screwdriver, who regenerates completely at times. And comes from a civilisation called the Time Lords that has at least two sexes.

You know this whole 'Time Lord Fact' business.

You do know this is fiction. Science fiction. TV science fiction. TV science fiction devised originally for children.

Done on a shoestring for much of it's run. Making things up to bring destroyed enemies back into existence. So when you actually say FACT in big bold capitals you really mean:

FICTION

Hmmmm I liked the immediate establishment of the Doctor's natural authority by Jodie Whitaker but I also like the commanding yet chaotic performance of Peter Capaldi, there's only one way to find out !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Never been a Daily Mail reader though I did use to read The Sun back in the day. Tits, scandal, and sports on the back pages.

Pedantic bit.
Three times in the "Key of Time" Arc, Romana is reffered to as a "Time Lord".
In "Destiny of the Daleks", Romana is referred to as a Time Lord".
In "The Five Doctors", Flavia, on Gallifrey, refers to herself, and the others present, as "The council of the Time Lords".

Aaaaaargh!
Lovely lady.
I met her )alongside Katy Manning and Sophie Aldred) at a convention in Glasgow about twenty years ago.
A great companion to Troughton's Doctor.
Maybe they'll animate "Evil of the Daleks" as a tribute?
(Well, 'Power' isn't bad, considering.)

It was great to hear the soundtrack they released a while back to corroborate my memories !!

Not sure whether I have the stamina for "Web of Fear" or "Tomb of the Cybermen" tonight. The telly's naff tomorrow, so it'll be DVD at the ready.
