Country music is emphatically not my cup of chai, but coming to him through Clapton* I will say he had a remarkable bass-end-of-baritone voice and an engagingly low-key style. Not my genre, but to me an undeniably superb artist.
* Whose cover of We're All the Way is even quieter and more laid-back than the original - better, IMO
