Thanks to the Internet, belief in a flat earth is growing, apparently.
The 2017 Flat Earth International Conference in the US has just finished :
https://fe2017.com/about/ (https://fe2017.com/about/)
Nasa have been lying to us for years it would appear.
No, really.

I suspect almost all of the alleged growth isn't real but based on the cachet that attends belonging to such a self-evidently absurd group - IIRC Patrick Moore was a member of the Flat Earth Society for a while on this basis.
-
This is absolutely genuine. I know a person who is a good birder and bird photographer. Indeed, some of his photos you may well have seen. He is also a member of the flat earth society, and, when talking to him once on a sea watch, he actually told me that if the earth actually was curving away from us, how come the oceans didn't actually drain away from the land we were standing on through the force of gravity? I was so astonished by this question that I simply went on counting the kittiwakes and auks that were passing, realising that anything I might have said would have gone so far over his head that it might well have rebounded off the sun.

in some cases I don't think its a matter of education, its more a case of some people are just born STUPID !

also , it has become big business on YouTube with film makers receiving ad revenue . They have latched onto a market of hundreds of thousands of , mainly poorly educated , religious ,anti establishment ,youngish AMERICANS

Surely nobody really believes the Earth is flat?

I agree - it does seem fantastically implausible.

but true!

The Greeks twigged a spherical Earth thousands of years ago when they watched ships sailing away from them toward the horizon and the top of the mast disappearing last. How do the flatties explain that one away?

Where are the elephants?
Where's the Turtle?
We need chelanauts to investgate.

Mind you, there is one poster on this forum, who just might believe the Earth to be flat. Like the moon landings, they may attribute the round Earth scenario to be devised by those who wish to pull the wool over our eyes! ;D

this is so amusing ;D

I wholeheartedly agree.
Sir Terry should have been given the Flat Eart Society Medal of Honour for his research and for his beautifully researched published works on the inhabitants of said Earth!

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/flat-earth-rocket-man-take-off-time-date-mad-mike-hughes-theory-a8068486.html
A man who suspects the earth is flat has built a rocket he hopes will launch him high enough to debunk one of the world's most fundamental facts.
Half a millennium of science isn’t about to get between 'Mad' Mike Hughes and his dream, and he's raring to go. The 61-year-old limo driver from California plans to launch over the weekend.
He built the steam-powered vessel using scrap metal and estimates it cost about about $20,000 (£15,000).
...
"I don’t believe in science," Mr Hughes told the Associated Press (AP). "I know about aerodynamics and fluid dynamics and how things move through the air, about the certain size of rocket nozzles, and thrust. But that’s not science, that’s just a formula. There’s no difference between science and science fiction."
Nothing like seeing for yourself ... :)

"....half a millenia"?
More like two and a half millenia (and counting) since we first deduced that Earth was round.
Good to see America hasn't lost its' grasp on history.
-
Wasn't it something to do with a Greek bloke putting sticks in the ground, taking measurements of the shadows, some geometry and somehow was able to work out the circumference of the earth to within a few miles of the actual measurements we have made in today's times, like Anch has said thousands of years ago.

well, well , what a clever chap. Just imagine how much more advanced we might be now if religion had not got in the way.

Religion is us! We produced it! It isn't external, at least not if you are someone who doesn't have a belief in external things to humanity.
-
Eratosthenes, ippy.
In spite of how clever they were the Greeks weren't that good at short easily pronounceable names, I notice.
regards ippy

Bill, Ted, and So-Crates would disagree

What is 'the way' it got in of? How would something thst is part of the way, which is what an atheist would have to argue, get in the way?

So how's the recovery process? Pain less? Doing the physio? etc.
-
I've just read , the Head of The Flat Earth Society has said they are facing a Global conspiracy against them :o

fantastic SD
I'm walking without sticks , able to drive , sleeping through the night , swelling reduced , no joint pain only residual stiffness in my leg muscles now . Cant believe how quickly things have improved , . Thanks for asking :-*

Outrageous. It's half a millennium.
-
Eratosthenes, ippy.
Eratosthenes measured the circumference of the Earth but he wasn't the first person to say it was round. Aristotle is, I believe , the first person to write down the arguments for the Earth being round, but that doesn't mean he thought of the idea.

I've onlyjust seen this post so sorry not to have responded before. That is very good news and since it is now several weeks later, I imagine you are moving around even more confidently.
Depending on what your physio says, I can recommend a fitness ball to sit on. I use it quite a lot when sitting hereand I do think it has helped to keep core muscles stronger. It was only £27 and the chap in the sports shop inflated it properly for me.

He was on board.
And he did survive. He got to as height of about 600 metres. Some sort of open cockpit plane might have been a better bet.

Oh. I didn't actually watch the video, but the rocket didn't look big enough.

Perhaps people forget, that for God nothing is impossible. Maybe everything is just not what it seems.

God lies to us, then? Also your statement that "for God nothing is impossible" needs a lot of qualification, even if you assume an objectively-existing God. Can God make a square circle, or a six-legged quadruped?

If anyone has an hour or two to spare and is interested in the complete idiocy of the flat earthers, here is a link to over 200 posts on the subject:

Plenty of fun along the way! 99% rational posts by the way!

People aren't 'forgetting' that that is a belief of some, they just don't share that belief.
