First impressions waere that it was pretty good. A wee bit sensationalised....we knew whe dagger was meteorite iron about fifteen years ago. The armour recon was fascinating, but the bit that really interested me wasn't from the tomb, but from Karnak. The partial recon of the battle scene was brilliant - I hadn't realised the Theban Temple Project had got so far; they've been pulling out bits of rubbke and bricks used as filling for other bits of the temple for years; the scene of the king on campaign looks very much like the triumph scenes of Thutmose III, Seti I, Ramesses II and Merenptah - among others - and those scenes were only carved as a result of an overseas campaign. Interesting.

Just a heads up that part 2 of Chris Naunton's reappraisal of the items from Tutankhamun's tomb is on C5 on Saturday night....followed by a quite interesting repeat of a documentary on Ramesses II.

Dunno if anyone watched it. It wasn't bad, if a bit over-dramatic. I'm not entirely convinced that that mask was, in fact mde for the king - for several reasons which have yet to be explained. 1. The mask was originally made with holes for ear rings...byt gold foil was put over the holes at the burial. 2. The mask, along with the coffins, bore on its' brow the vulture and cobra (Nekhbet and Wadjet) On no other king's coffin, or mask - and we have a few - do both emblems appear on the brow side by side. All other kings' coffins, masks and nearly all statues have only the Wadget cobra. Even the statues belonging to Tutankhamun found at Luxor, or elsewhere in Egypt and the Sudan, bear only the Wadjet cobra...and don't show any evidence of ear rings...nor, for that matter, do any other masks or coffins of any other king. Curiously, we have many examples of the coffins of female nobles, or kings' wives....and most sho ear piercings. That still suggests to me that the original owner of that mask was the female king Ankhkheperure Neferneferuaten (Nefertiti ruling as king) It's been suggested she was Tutankhamun's step mother. Aidan Dodson, who appeared on the programme tonight, goes further and postulates that she was Tutankhamun's birth mother. End of geeky bit.

In case you missed it, part 3 - the final part - was on C5 on Saturday. The presenter sounded as if he was on drugs, overhyping the 'tragic boy king' guff, but on the whole, the programme was worth a watch, and is still available on catch up. There's a great feature on the two tiny foetuses buried with the king which is definately worth a watch.
