Of course it is.

Christ. That isn’t even the best Oasis song ever.

And Bohemian Rhapsody which it displaced is not even the best song on A Night at the Opera.

Which is saying something significant. Wonderwall is IMO a genuinely good song but that's about it

Don't Look Back in Anger

She's Electric.

A man goes into as restaurant and looks at the menu. The oasis soup looks interesting, he thinks, so he orders it. When the soup comes, it is just ordinary tinned tomato and a lump of bread and he is quite upset. He calls the waiter over to complain. "This is just tomato soup" he says. "It's rubbish". "What do you mean?" says the waiter. "[singing] You gotta roll with it."

You've just made a roll joke very happy.

And yes, I think those are valid choices of good songs. Neither though would be close to the top hundred British songs IMO.

Ofuckingasis? Do me a favour - they were almost as rubbish as the Smiths, which is saying something!

My sentiments exactly: the former were wannabe Beatles (and failed in the attempt) and the Smiths were, it seems to me, utterly tuneless in every respect.

The Smiths are to my mind the second best British band of the last 40 years.

Not a fan of The Smiths. However I was persuaded to go and see Johnny Marr a year or two ago and he was phenomenal. I came to the conclusion that the only problem with The Smiths was Morissy.

That's the key isn't it: "IMO". Whether you like a song or a band is entirely subjective and yet here we all are (well some of us) proclaiming in absolute terms that the Smiths and Oasis are shit.

Johnny Marr is a genius. I had a very interesting conversation about him with the very lovely Elevenses, who I still miss very much.

Morrisey’s lyrics are spot on for an angst-ridden teenager; some of them don’t look so good thirty years later. But I can remember how they made me feel then, and some undoubtedly have stood the test of time. I appreciate Mr Morrosey even if in later life he seems to act like a bit of a dick.

Whether you like a song or a band (or a novel, or a poem, or a symphony, or a painting, or a play) is subjective; whether it is good or bad isn't, at least not completely. There are objective (well, strictly speaking "inter-subjective", but it amounts to much the same thing) standards to judge these things by. If there weren't, popularity would be the only crtierion, and Patience Strong would be the greatest modern poet.

How do you objectively judge whether Oasis are good or bad? Please show your workings.

The literacy and subtlety of their lyrics, the originality of their music, etc. (Or not, in all cases.)

How do you judge those objectively?

Can you show where Oasis copied Don't Look Back In Anger from? Also how does its lyrics fall short in terms of literacy and subtlety?

Blur made Prozac rhyme with Balzac. Always thought that was pretty neat.

Being fair, Damon Albarn was never particularly happy about Country House. I think it's probably fair to say a song isn't a great song, if even the person who wrote it think's it isn't any good.

I can't be bothered, because I'm not very familiar with Oasis's oevre, but if you think artistic worth is purely subjective, go ahead and assume that Patience Strong is the greatest modern poet.

It’s not a great song - Imo To The End is the best of their output but there are quite a few I’d put ahead of Country House - but (again, IMO) it’s still cleverer than anything Noel Gallagher has come up with.

The only answer to the ridiculous statement above is this:

And, if by the end of this performance you aren't a puddle on the floor, then you have no soul.

I mean it, really, it's been stolen by the devil.
