Title: Pictures of early 1960s Edinburgh
Post by: Nearly Sane on April 24, 2018, 03:54:30 PM

Saw this elsewhere, it looks longer ago from the 80s than the 80s look to me now.

I love these websites - every major city and town has them and they are always worth seeking out. Some are FB based others standalone sites and others belong to local authorities. Many are fascinating.

This is one of my local favourite ones:

The work that volunteers put into these sites is amazing.

The Emmett Water Clock.

Well, I suppose it made up for the destruction of Nottingham Victoria Station - four through platforms and four bay platforms at each end on two islands. Six platforms in each direction constrained into two track tunnels.  A huge cavern containing a great railway station. I remember the spot where I stood and watched my father being taken back to his minesweeper when I was about three.

It was on the Great Central Line - built to continental loading gauge with a view to linking it to continental rail services by means of a Channel tunnel. And linking Manchester, Sheffield, Nottingham  and Leicester with ... eventually ... Wembley Stadium.

HH - you might find this of interest, it's a site I have been following for some time now:

(The pink background is hideous though!)

There is also a FB page which is more easily viewed:

Many thanks, Trent. That is fascinating.

Pity about the pink, though. It makes the text almost unreadable!
