Well, if they scrapped the ******* weapons of mass destruction parked not far from Glasgow, they could build more real boats to play at being powerful.

Unfortunately, It's as simple as when you' were at school where the biggest lads didn't get picked on, let's hope they're never used, it amazes me when supposedly grown up people can't see this, admittedly ugly fact.
I'll bet if you do read a newspaper it's the Guardian.

Who are we deterring from attacking us?
-
As General Sir John Hackett, former head of the British Army said (I think it was him - some top British soldier, anyway) "You can't fight wars with nuclear weapons; you can only blow up the world". Ippy's analogy is very crude. We don't need nuclear weapons for deterrence, given enough conventional armament, and at best they will never be used, despite their eye-watering cost. Scrap 'em!

I can see you are once again trying to prove your liberal credntials. I must say I admire the sterling job you are making of it. Now howabout addressing the point instead of your usual boring Grauniad bashing and say under what circumstances you would push your big red button?

I don't like the bomb or the fact we have it any more than most but it's essential to live in this world as it is not as some people would like to think it is, it isn't a very friendly place at times, but then again that would be beyond the comprehension of most Guardian readers and not worth the effort of trying to explain to them.

This Guardian reader at least knows how to punctuate properly.

Bully for you Steve is that all you can find to say but then again you are a self confessed Guardian reader don't let it worry you

Steven you know ippy is dyslexic, you've been told - I told you. That's so not fair, it's below the belt.
Counter his arguments, that's what others have done.

Oops - forgot. Sorry.

Ta Rob, I'll never get the niceties of spelling or punctuation, I can live with it, don't let it worry you on my behalf, it's not that much of a worry to me, it seems to worry others more than it does me, their loss not mine.
At least I'm not a Guardian reader.

What about those places who don't have it? How do they survive?

I do the things I'm able to do to protect mine and my home and other than making my contribution to law enforcement there's very little else I can do.
It would be wonderful if we could live without law enforcement or doing the obvious things we need to do to protect our own and our homes, you're quite an intelligent chap N S, do I really need to say any more.

Maybe answer the question rather than ignore it.

The fact is we would not be protecting ourselves or our own if we set off a nuclear bomb & 'the bomb' is not a deterrent.
Campaigning against it in sufficient number is one way of doing our bit to protect ourselves and others.

Who are we deterring from attacking us?
If you get rid of them, you might find out. The risk must not be taken.

I grew up hearing this song from my parents and their friends.
The sun is burning in the sky,
Strands of clouds go slowly drifting by,
In the park the lazy breeze, Are joining in the flowers, among the trees,
And the sun burns in the sky.
Now the sun is in the West,
Little kids go home to take their rest,
And the couples in the park,
Are holdin' hands and waitin' for the dark, And the sun is in the West.
Now the sun is sinking low,
Children playing know it's time to go,
High above a spot appears,
A little blossom blooms and then draws near,
And the sun is sinking low.

Now the sun has come to Earth,
Shrouded in a mushroom cloud of death,
Death comes in a blinding flash,
Of hellish heat and leaves a smear of ash,
And the sun has come to Earth.
Now the sun has disappeared,
All is darkness, anger, pain and fear,
Twisted, sightless wrecks of men,
Go groping on their knees and cry in pain,
And the sun has disappeared.

So who are they deterring? How do other nations survive without them? What is the risk?

Something we'll never agree on Rob, I don't think you are living in the world as it unfortunately is and for some reason you probably think I'm not.
