A bit icky, not least collecting personal data on children, but also underlying this is the way in which these companies reach mums to be and their families - through the NHS. See also Bounty Club.

When my cousin and I were having our eldest kids, she got ED and I was given Bounty. Both were simply selling your name and address plus the due date of your baby so that you could have stuff marketed at you through the post. Bounty also turned up in hospital and badgered you to sign up to their 'new mums' programme, with bags of free shit (chemically-laden fabric softener etc.) By the time I had my third child I was declining it all - so obviously a racket and you just ended up with a load of crap you didn't want; saying no was greeted with mysitification from the 'Bounty Lady' herself, but I did stand my ground pretty well considering I'd just had major surgery and the catheter was still in.

So now they've got more sophisticated
