How on earth can you lead any sort of normal life with fingernails that long? :o

Revolting! I wonder if it's true? In real life, wouldn't they have broken off at one point? Even people with strong nails who like them long break nails from time to time and they're not even anywhere near as long as those.

I don't think there is any doubt it is true, they are going on display in New York.

I remember someone with nails like this appearing on (I think) Blue Peter back in the 70s, or maybe it was Swap Shop. IIRC it's a status thing, because the person with nails like that can't do even the most basic tasks, and must have servants to do it for them. When I was growing up a family friend from Mauritius let his little fingernails grow - part of his culture, although he kept them at the normal length for long nails, if that makes sense.

I was just about to say that the Chinese used to do the same - have one particularly long little fingernail as a sign that they didn't do any manual labour.

Not that long ago I saw a woman in the supermarket with approx five inch long nails, she seemed to be having difficulty taking goods off the shelves. I wondered how she managed the small child she had with her, as those nails looked lethal.  :o

In keeping with my title of "I'm only saying what you're all thinking, except that I'm the one who'll say it": who else is wondering how these people ... let us say ... perform their sanitary ablutions?

Don't say you didn't think of it as well, because you know you did.

With nails like that you would be unable to perform any personal function at all.

The nails are on one hand only.

There are many other examples, from many different cultures, of people deliberately doing something like that. Posh people in medieval Europe wore very wide sleeves, completely impractical for doing any kind of manual labour, and "churchwarden" pipes, with their long stems, are difficult to clench in the teeth in order to use both hands, and were smoked by churchwardens and other venerable senior members of the community to show that they didn't do manual labour. (Actually, the bit about the pipes is my guess, but it makes sense.)

True - on the same theme, and Neil Oliver has never mentioned this, how did people in antiquity cut their toenails before the evolution of nail-clippers?
