As a concerned mother I am worried that my vicar daughter is unable to wear anything on her head in very hot weather when performing a burial, as she is doing tomorrow.
I have taken it upon myself to e-mail the Archbishop to see if he can devise a suitable piece of headgear for his clergy to protect them from the sun.
I will see what sort of response I get. I haven't as yet informed my girl that I have contacted him.

See if a member of the congregation could hold an umbrella or parasol for her. You can buy repro Victorian jobs in both black and white but for tomorrow a standard plain or black brolly should do the job. Or, put a pop-up gazebo over the burial plot and protect the mourners as well.
When not conducting a service she can wear what she wants on her head.

At least she has hair! There are those of us who have practically nothing to protect our bare scalps from the celestial furnace!!!

One should wear head protection in very hot weather, it is the sensible thing to do.

Because it's not the first time you've been presented with workable solutions to problems and rejected them out of hand. Why not just pass them onto your daughter and let her choose? I've seen gazebos erected over graves in the rain so I see no reason why one couldn't be used to protect those present from the effects of the heat. Ditto umbrellas to keep rain off. I'd have thought the mourners would welcome the shade.

I didn't say that I know what she'd do; it's a part of treating an adult like a grown-up that you let them make their own decisions. If you were that bothered you'd put the suggestions to her even if she tells you to do one because either will afford her some protection from the heat. Either is more effective than emailing her boss without her knowledge (I won't comment further on that) and asking him to invent some clergy headware, which isn't going to help your daughter survive tomorrow's heatwave.

Depends how fair she is. I couldn't.

In that case I would think a wide brimmed hat would be in order. No-one would object to the vicar wearing one and you can get black straw hats.
Most of the female mourners will have hats.

It certainly would for some people, even half an hour is too much for many, but they won't be outside for an hour it doesn't take that long.
I hope they'll be shaded by trees but anyway a hat would be acceptable.

It could do when the Met Office are now advising people to stay out of the sun, especially between 11:00am and 4:00pm.

Neither would I, but I did have a parish priest who held his own convictions about when a hat could and couldn't be worn, which is why I suggested non-hat solutions. A priest who holds no such convictions should be free to do whatever is necessary to stay safe.

Agreed. The whole idea of what people wear on their heads having an effect on anything except their own health is quite barmy anyway.

As an aside, non-hat solutions keep you cooler and don't mess up your hair.

Although I've got a gorgeous black wide-brimmed straw hat that I bought on Amazon for a score. With shades I look vaguely like Joan Collins. I also bought a Chinese parasol on there which only works when it isn't breezy ie. not on the North Norfolk coast.

How did your daughter get on at funeral LR? Did she cover her head?
