Very sad. One of the first singles I ever bough was "Band of Gold" (Her version of the Freda Payne hit) duetted with the Gospel icon Leon Pattillo. I've loved her voice ever since.

Yep.
I expanded my post - I realised I should have explained.
I was going through a black Gospel phase and liked Leon Pattillo - and bought a single of him duetting with her from Tower records (those were the days)

One of my favourite singers. To me, the raw emotion and rhythm she engendered was what soul music is all about. She sang with sincerity and she moved me.

Article in the Times says that Aretha Franklin had 2 children by 2 different fathers by 14 because 'many gospels singers had a penchant for casual sex'. Ffs!
