Very sad. One of the first singles I ever bough was "Band of Gold" (Her version of the Freda Payne hit) duetted with the Gospel icon Leon Pattillo. I've loved her voice ever since.

Isn't Band Of Gold as a single sung by Freda Payne?

Yep.
I expanded my post - I realised I should have explained.
I was going through a black Gospel phase and liked Leon Pattillo - and bought a single of him duetting with her from Tower records (those were the days)

Expected, but sad nonetheless - what a voice she had. My favourite of hers.

One of my favourite singers. To me, the raw emotion and rhythm she engendered was what soul music is all about. She sang with sincerity and she moved me.

Amongst many links posted by people in my timelines yesterday from Aretha, I liked this which is her duetting with Curtis Mayfield after he was paralysed from the neck down.

I'd note that if anyone has had their interest piqued by tributes to Aretha Franklin of the music and civil rights history, Stuart Cosgrove's books Detroit 67, and Memphis 68 are great.

Article in the Times says that Aretha Franklin had 2 children by 2 different fathers by 14 because 'many gospels singers had a penchant for casual sex'. Ffs!
