This series reminds me of Judas Priest. Nobody took too much notice of Judas Priest in 1974, it was only a huge marketing campaign some years later that they became world famous. Nowadays any criticism of them in the media gets the wrath of a huge number of people. Likewise this TV series, nobody took too much notice of the film of 1990, now it is being hailed as some great work of literature.

Drivel

"The Handmaid's Tale won the 1985 Governor General's Award and the first Arthur C. Clarke Award in 1987; it was also nominated for the 1986 Nebula Award, the 1986 Booker Prize, and the 1987 Prometheus Award. '

It's an extraordinary book by one of the great authors.

Because it was crap.
Quote
now it is being hailed as some great work of literature.
Which it is - and as NS has pointed out, it was at the time.

That is the novel. I was talking about the film.

Your post then makes no sense since it isn't the film that is being heralded as a great piece of literature.

Erm.... was the novel widely known before the marketing of the TV series?

Bruce Nauman has won many accolades, but he is hardly a household name.

The film was generally received as an at best mediocre example of cinema which poorly reflected or exemplified the original novel, which is true.

The (to date) two TV series of THT have been generally received as superb television adaptations which accurately reflect and exemplify the original novel, which is also true.

The horror. Neither is Steve my postman, save in my household. Your point ... if you have one?

Yes. And Margaret Atwood is one the most renowned authors in the world

I really enjoyed the book. Not seen film, if I can access it online I might watch it.

As for the outfit, I want one to wear to work. What an entrance I would make! A real jade, in scarlet.

Judas Priest were the greatest metallers! Not to everyone's taste of course but who cares about them.

Judas Priest IMHO are three chord crap. If you want to discuss this further then let us go to the music board.

It depends what you mean by "widely known". I know about it, although I haven't read it, and I suspect, anybody with a passing interest in literature has known about it for years.

No I don't. Mainly because I got their name mixed up with another group who were quite different. When my husb came in I started talking about Judas Priest and he pointed out where I was mistaken, with accompanying mirth  :-[.

Not really. I have two toilets for that. Do you still have what you consider to be a point?

He's sharpening it.

Black Sabbath?

Even I'm not dozy enough to get Ozzy mixed up with someone else.

Very good  :)

If you, or anybody else, does want to know more about Bruce, his work is on the Internet. I only know about him because he was the subject of a late night arty programme on the telly a few years ago. The commentary involved the observation "The interesting thing about Nauman's work is that whilst it wins many awards, nobody seems to actually like it".

Yes, did you? I did and it was read on BBC4 about 2000.

In my case I don't even know it. Bit curious now to hear it.
