Title: Best and worst game and panel shows
Post by: Steve H on November 20, 2018, 11:13:10 PM
There are, of course, two kinds - celebrity and civilian ones, depending on the competitors. The best celebrity one, beyond all peradventure, is 'I'm Sorry, I Haven't a Clue'. Good civilian ones were 'Ask the Family' and 'The Generation Game', and nowadays 'Countdown' is not bad. (BTW, it's Marina Hyde in the 'Grauniad' who calls non-celebs "civilians"). Worst? One I dimly remember from my adolescence in the mid-60s. I can't remember who presented it, what it was called, or whether it was celeb or civilian, but the idea was to guess which of three peoploe or things was genuine, for example - the only round I remember - three young women came on wearing trousers, and shuffling with their legs together. The teams had to guess which one had her trouser-legs sewn together so that she was obliged to walk like that. It was that pathetic. It didn't last long. Nowadays, 'Deal Or No Deal' is pretty crap, involving no skill or knowledge at all, and I hate the kind of quiz show in which the competitors are expected to chat abpout it instead of just saying what they think the answer is, e.g. the idiot who was asked which of four words was a medieval weapon. One word was "Mace", and he said "Well, I know mace is a deterrent spray, so it can't be that...".

'Mock the Week' and 'QI' are the best celebrity ones on TV at the moment.

Of the "celebrity" ones I used to like "Face The Music" with the dummy keyboard, and quite often the lovely Joyce Grenfell.

For some reason I always had a liking for anything that Bob Monkhouse did in this line of shows, not a preference I quite understand as I can't say that I really warmed to him. But he was very accomplished at presenting them.

With you on "Face the music", TVV....but I'd add "Call my bluff" and the TV version of "Just a minute" as well (OK, I'm a 'Just a minute' addict...have been since childhood. I like Q.I. as well. As for non-celeb stuff? "Only Connect" is pretty good. If I have a moan, it's Mastermind. I think it has dumbed down since Magnus Magnusson's day....and, sincer I knew the man in question, I think he'd have agreed.

Pointless is very good!

Especially if you want to see how many completely useless ERs & ERMs you can hear when contestants reply to the questions ?!?!?!

I agree about Face the Music. Mastermind has dumbed down. I watch University Challenge and enjoy it (usually).

I also watch Pointless. It fascinates me - because it is so ... err ... bad. Armstrong's comments must be scripted - they are totally predictable "three good answers" (when none of them is even appropriate) "coveted Pointless trophy" (coveted by whom?). The contestants who reach the final round usually pick a subject that is usually popular culture related without even considering that their choice of answer will be shared by many other people.

And the prize, £1000, is peanuts.

I find its awfulness mesmerising.

I quite like pointless too. Usually watch it with my mum when I go and see her.

Used to love watching Bullseye with my old man who was a darts fanatic. The old ones are the best.

I don't watch much these days but have just seen Richard Osman's House of Games on BBC2 which I enjoyed.

For a celebrity game show I've occasionally seen 'Would I lie to you?' which is funny.

Is that a game show? I'd say it's a panel show. It's still the best.

That sounds like Who Wants to be a Millionaire. I quite liked it, but it was somewhat annoying the way Chris Tarrant would spin out the time.

I've altered the thread title to avoid any ambiguity.

It probably was. I didn't see it - I read it in 'Dumb Britain' in 'Private Eye'.

I love Taskmaster.

Also love Would I Lie To You.

The rebooted Crystal Maze would have been fab were it not for the spectacularly annoying contestants.

Loved The Adventure Game from years ago and (ultimate geekiness) Knightmare.

Ah, The Adventure Game. One of my favorites. That’s a gamer that permanently imprinted the colors of the spectrum onto my memory.

I note that, in series 1, Ian Messiter was in the cast. He is, of course, famous as the creator of another of Radio 4’s giants in the panel game genre - Just a Minute.

Anyone of a certain vintage remember the awful Hughie Green and 'Double Your Money' (and I mean that most sincerely)?

Ah, yes....with that equally awful Monica Rose as the...er...glamerous assistant?

321

It now looks like a dry run for Brexit where bewildered members of the public make their way through incomprehensible nonsense guided/ hustled by a man in a suit who has the "gee up" style of Farage .....the only difference being they win something at the end and the host doesn't run away with the prizes.

Yes, I thought of 321 later, with its ridiculously wordy, obscure clues. Apparently, it was a French game show that we borrowed. I can believe that - les grenouilles never use one word where twenty will do.

Oh yes Anchor, loved that even though now can't quite remember what it was about but at the time, 'Great egg race' was enjoyable.

Still want to know if anyone enjoys 'The Chase'. I've heard about but not seen except catching bits. Seems to be a current favourite.

The Chase is bad but somehow good. My kids watch it in hotels rooms and when visiting granddad. I wouldn't go out of my way to watch it but don't run out of the room screaming if it happens to be on and do find myself shouting answers at the telly.

Thanks Anch!

Fell asleep on sofa when got home, have 'Chase' on at the moment and all I see is Bradley Walsh firing general knowledge questions to contestants which is fair enough but there must be more to it than that. Husband cooking, I'm so tired but will try to stay awake sufficiently to get the point.

PS: Missed bits, will have to watch again.

Rhi, I liked Crystal Maze with Richard from Rocky Horror. My kids loved it & we tried to play it, also that Anneke Rice thing, Treasure Hunt. :-[  Oh the things we do.

Whilst typing the above I've missed bit of the Chase which shows what it's about. Damn.
