There have been a number of cases of the British military being called in to a policing role within the UK. I can’t think of a single case that was an unmitigated success.

Surely, if you are saying the police can’t deal with a crime wave, it is an admission that you are not putting enough resources into the police.

Are police trained to disarm someone attacking with a knife? If not, I'd suggest combat trained soldiers would have more confidence in a scenario where it would be inappropriate for them to be too heavily armed themselves, eg doing random stop and searches outside schools, in parks etc.
Opposite our house is a primary school. We frequently get parents parking on the yellow lines during drop off and pickup times. This is being tackled by putting up more noticeable signs telling them not to; also traffic wardens appearing at random times and standing near the school, which is very effective.
Perhaps penalties for carrying a knife should be displayed on signs, and specially designated personnel from the Forces be doing a similar thing to the above traffic wardens.
The other thing is drill music, which is supposed to be one of the causes of all this. It should be banned.

Soldiers are not trained to disarm people with knives, they are trained to shoot them with a gun.

I half expected it to say that Williamson was going to take them on single handedly.

Next he'll be saying he can fight a lion, as Ricky Gervais so humourously put it...... when he once felt a little funny.

They are trained in hand to hand combat so I thought that would include defence against knife attack.

It's use of language like this that leads to physical violence. Have you thought of banning it on this forum?

Even in hand to hand combat, they are probably taught to finish off the opponent. They are not taught to detain or arrest people. Nor are they taught how to diffuse dangerous situations. In short, they are not taught to handle situations where civilians are breaking the law.  That’s why we have police.

Usually, when the army has been asked to get involved in law enforcement, the result has been a disaster.
