The strange case of whether a mermaid can be black

Observation number one: the character is half fish. I would have thought that the colour of the skin of the top half should be pretty much irrelevant when the skin of the bottom half is scales.
Observation number two: this is just loud mouthed people on Twitter. It's as if a reporter went into a pub, heard a shouty loud man mouthing off about the blacks and decided this was a story worth reporting. There are 330 million active Twitter users. If only 0.1% of them decided to make a fuss over skin colour, that would be 330,000 racist tweets. This is a non story.

Except if we deal in numbers less than half that will determine the next PM. And you then ignore the effect of normalisation of racism.

What has this got to do with electing a new prime minister?
And you then ignore the effect of normalisation of racism.
No, what I'm saying is that people should keep things in proportion. This is a story about people complaining on Twitter. That means it is not a story. People are always complaining on Twitter. If Disney had cast a white actor, there would have been people complaining about "white Hollywood", not the same people, obviously.

You argued it about numbers, the numbers you suggested as not being important were twice that that will elect the PM. And yes, it doesn't have to be the most important story to be a story. I think you are falling for a false dichotomy

No I pointed out that you don't need a large percentage of complainers on Twitter to make a lot of noise.
the numbers you suggested as not being important were twice that that will elect the PM.
You do realise that the Tory membership is quite small compared to the number of people on Twitter don't you?

It's a story in the same way that it was standing room only on the commuter train I took to London the other day. It's not a story. If you are going to get outraged every time there are a lot of complaints about something on Twitter, you are going to spend your entire life outraged.

Again a false dichotomy - to think something has some import doesn't mean I have to be outraged.

I infer the outrage based on your responses to my points.
"People on Twitter get shouty about something" really should not be described as a story. It's no more consequential than the fact that people in pubs get shouty about things.

What in my replies are you using to infer I am outraged?
