I was interested to discover that the environmental campaigner, Greta Thunberg, has Asperger's syndrome, OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) and elective mutism. I have a particular interest in Asperger's syndrome as our eldest grandson has it, his mother has just been diagnosed with it, and in all probability my husband has it too. A lot of highly intelligent people have the syndrome, which seems to help rather than hinder their academic progress. However, coping with a child with the condition can be quite hard, I suspect Thunberg's parents don't find it easy, especially as in addition she has two other disorders.

Our grandson, who is nearly 18, went to a primary school, but his parents thought he would be better home schooled for his secondary education. He was so much brighter than the other pupils and was teased because of it. He got his GCSEs well before he was 16 with mostly A*s. His mother suggested he did his A levels at a college as she was unable to assist with the subjects he wished to take, but he decided he would teach himself, which he is more than capable of doing. He is obsessive about trains and takes himself off on them all over the country and recently to Europe. He is still not entirely sure what he wishes to do when he finishes his schooling, but will take a year out in the US before going to uni.
My husband gets on extremely well with our grandson as they see things the same way. They never chat, they have debates, where they each provide evidence to support their POV. I leave them to get on with it as it is well above my poor little brain cell's capability.
When I was young, autism was not something that most people had ever heard of. When I first met my husband I thought he was very different to the other lads I had met, they were boring in comparison. He and his best friend, who mostly likely has Asperger's too, spent a lot of time creating circuit diagrams, with which they appeared to be obsessed. My husband rewired houses to help pay his way through university, and his best buddy was a top rocket battery designer at ESA. My husband can't be tested to see if he definitely has the condition due to the serious brain damage he has sustained, but I don't think there is much he has it. He says he liked being the way he was before his brain haemorrhage deprived him of half his brain.

You are probably the last person in the world to discover that Greta is an aspie. I thought everyone knew that.

Unfortunately, I've heard it argued (on a forum you may have visited) that this makes her views not worth listening to.

If it is the forum I think you mean, I was very annoyed indeed with that comment and the cretin who made it. GT makes some very valid points, which is more than can be said for those who don't think climate change is down to human activity.

Yes I did read that a while ago however when I saw thread title I couldn't remember who she was for a minute. She has Asperger's, selective mutism and OCD, is see you said that in opening post. The fact she has Asperger's means she is single minded in her research and campaigning - so it's useful in this instance. Many Asperger's people are extremely intelligent &have perfect recall, they collect data & churn it out easily where necessary.
I have two nephews (not brothers) who have Asperger's, they're great. Do get bees in their bonnets going on about somet thngs ad infinitum at times, doesn't bother me. They're well adjusted people.

You gave that impression, but HEY HO I don't care what you think of me, I have many much more important issues with which to concern myself.

I didn't know about the OCD and I had to look up elective mutism to find out what it is... or was. Elective mutism seems to be an obsolete term. In any case, she says she has selective mutism.

Greta looks much younger than she actually is, if I didn't know she was 16 I would have thought she was 11 or 12. At the age of 12 I looked much older than she does now. One of her second names is Tintin!
I think she would get on very well with my aspie Grandson, he and the rest of his family are committed environmentalists.
