It's encouraging seeing someone so 'little' being so earnest, intense. I hope she goes on to address other/related issues but this may be her once and forever 'big' cause.

I imagine her parents are proud but also somewhat in awe of her.

Her parents are an opera singer and an actor. Rather than being in awe of her they probably think that she is a chip off both of their blocks.

A bit of both I would think. She is so different to her parents and her personality is far from neurotypical so I imagine, once she started speaking up they each thought, "She gets that from me, who'd have thought", with a smile. They must be proud.
