As I've mentioned before, I dislike musicals in general, with possibly a few grudging exceptions - I agree with whoever said that musicals are opera for stupid people - and judging by the bits of the stage show I've seen on TV on various occasions, 'Cats' is a particularly egregious example. (I love TSE's original poems.)

Whereas jazz is just random notes, at least that is what a lot of it sounds like to me.

True - without hearing aids I am functionally deaf, but jazz is 'my' music.

No doubt, some might say, being deaf helps - but I would just reply 'Miles Davis', or maybe 'Dexter Gordon', or perhaps 'Dizzy Gillespie'.

In general I agree with you on this one but quite a few of the arias are tremendous just as some of the singers are.
