They are horrendous, I feel so sorry for the people who are affected by them. They are also experiencing the hottest summer on record thought to be due to global warming. :o

Yes, it's really awful. Couple I know were planning on going to Sydney for Christmas and new year (& a few days either side), to stay with close rellies, accompanied by daughter, son in law and grandchildren; they had to cancel because one of them was ill and hospitalised (OK now but not ready to travel), just as well really. I saw the wife/mum a day or two ago and she told me that it was a blessing in disguise they had to cancel.
I feel so much for people affected by the fires, can't imagine much more frightening.
I know one R&E member has an adult child and family in Oz, don't know the area they live in, I'm sure they're alright but it must be so worrying.

I have a cousin who I believe lives in New South Wales with her husband, I hope they are not affected by the fires.

I was talking to my daughter who lives in a suburb of Brisbane this morning , she was telling me how everyone is so on edge at the moment . Apparently firefighters from NZ and Canada have been brought in to help .today they had temps of 43c but managed to keep cool in their new pool but the air is heavy with smoke
She works in Brisbane and Sidney but all visits to Sidney have been cancelled for now
She did say there is a chance of rain on Wednesday though
They are all safe and well 😘

My son-in-laws parents arrived from England this morning to spend Christmas them .
It has given them a bit of a boost to have some family with them 👍
I'm trying to decide whether or not to go myself but I have a spinal op booked in for early January ????

As much as you want to be with them, it probably isn't wise to make a very long journey if you have a problem with your spine, especially if you were unable to get back in time for your surgery. I should think the idea of you travelling in your condition would add to your daughter's stress.

I'm in a bit of a quandary at the moment . She knows I have a bad back and has suggested I take shorter journeys and hotel stay overs which she's offered to pay for if I decide to come .
I haven't told her about the op !!!!

I can see why you are in a bit of a quandary. However, your girl is going to find out about your op sooner or later, and you will probably find yourself in the deep proverbial for not having informed her about it. My advice is to be honest with her. If you missed out on your surgery, it might be ages before you are offered another date for it.

thing is , I've already postponed it once , it was originally set for the 7 October but I wasnt ready !!!

I presume the longer you leave it the worse your back problem will become? Obviously the decision is yours, but I don't think it is wise to put it off again, I suspect your daughter would agree with me.

I agree with LR about your op, Walter, also that it would be best for you to tell your daughter about it.
Glad your daughter & family in Australia are fine and well, must be a relief for you to know that. Can't imagine coping with such heat.

Not sure about telling her about the op though , don't want to worry her .
There's a lot of distance between us but emotionally we are very close . If I have the op I'll tell her afterwards .

I was on a beach in Oz a couple of years ago , there were beach wardens issuing on the spot fines to people who were putting out lit cigarette butts in the sand

I have breakfast telly on atm, unusual for me but brought to my attention that the fires seem to br worse than ever. We have fires here but nothing on the scale of Australia.

spoke to my daughter last night , they have bags packed ready to leave when the call comes .
They are all safe for now , heavy rain fell in their area for the fist time in months so eleviating immediate danger
