Sometimes they get it remarkably right and very wrong at the same time. In 1945, Arthur C. Clarke published this article (http://lakdiva.org/clarke/1945ww/1945ww_oct_305-308.html), predicting communication satellites about 20 years before they became a reality - but, writing in the pre-transistor age, he imagined them as permanently-manned space stations, with crews who would be necessafry for repair and maintenance.
