Title: Death of an editor. .......
Post by: Anchorman on January 17, 2020, 09:40:04 AM
......But what an editor! Without him, we wouldn't have LOTR as we know it today, nor the Silmarillion, amongst others. https://www.harpercollins.co.uk/corporate/press-releases/comment-from-harpercollins-uk-on-the-death-of-christopher-tolkien-editor-author-and-son-of-j-r-r-tolkien/

Quote
Christopher was an editor from the age of 5, catching inconsistencies in his father’s bedtime tales, and was promised tuppence by his father for every mistake he noticed in The Hobbit.

What a brilliantly healthy attitude to instil in your children.

Yes, the Silmarillion especially. Read them all roughly about once a year. Will have to read them again pronto.

I haven't read the Silmarillion but LotR could really haver done with editing for tedium.

I agree - with the author himself, in his introduction to LOTR....he said it was too short.
