Underrated, I think in carrying a series like The Virginian.

I liked 'The Virginian'. Not generally a Western fsn, but that was good. Odd that Western films and TV series, once so popular, have largely disappeared.

"Cowboys and Indians", sorry, "Immigrants and Native Americans" - politically incorrect.

They didn't necessarily have anything to do with Indians.

True, but since cowboy and indian films were a significant element of the genre this may well have been a factor.

Westerns were largely replaced by cop shows such as HAwaii 5O.
'The Simpsons' had an episode featuring Dennis Weaver in which that fact was explored, Bart tries to bring Westerns back into popular culture. It was really funny, called 'The Lastest Gun in the West'. I recommend it if you can find it.

A modern western series is Yellowstone with  Kevin Costner, I haven't seen but intend to get round to it eventually.

Deadwood , 3 series, is another and IMO a really good moden western. Ian McShane and Timothy Oliphant starring.

Godless also, a 7 episode mini series. Jeff Daniels is good as a baddie in that one.

Trouble is that a lot of modern ones muck about with the genre. I remember seeing a film on TV which was supposed to be a Western, but was set in about 1910. 'Brokeback Mountain' was set in the 1960s. 'Cowboys and Aliens', good fun though it was, really took the piss.
