Title: Names that should be revived.
Post by: Steve H on May 16, 2020, 05:52:11 PM
Parthenope
Beauregarde
Lettice
Aloysius
Honoria
Horatio
Anastasia
Hilarius
Fredegond
Prosper

All genuine names, and a refreshing change, I think you'll own, from Jade, Darren, Chardonnay, and Wayne. Any more suggestions for names that should be revived?
NB: this thread is not altogether serious.

I will be seriously glad when the names on the second list vanish and join those on the first list in the cesspit of rampant sadism against children.

I whole heartedly agree with you.

Life support equipment is a short supply at present!

Life support equipment is a short supply at present!

In this particular case, long may that situation continue - the usage on this Forum has done nothing whatsoever to enhance the name's reputaion or appeal! As far as I am concerned anyway!

Most of the ancestors of mine had names which weren't outlandish. I was just sorry my favourite grandmother was landed with the name, Bertha. My father and four of his five siblings had Biblical names, which are commonly used to this day.

Then there's "Murder" and "Strongitharm", which were used at least once during Victoria's reign, according to 'The Book Of Heroic Failures'.

I do like Jed.

Origin of the name Jed:
Short form of Jedidiah, which is derived from the Hebrew Yedidiah (beloved of Jehovah).

Don't know if I cold inflict 'Jedidiah' on a child of mine. Thankfully won't have to  :D.
Latest family member is Joseph Charles - Joe - which I like v much. We also had a Marcus and Annabelle not too long ago which are both charmign names imo. Joe, Mark (or Marc for pedants) and Anna - all cousins, excellent.

I prefer French names and glad we gave them to our three girls as they reflect my heritage on my father's side of the family.

My wife and I decided that any children we had would not be given unusual or outlandish names. My first name is not very common and caused me problems when I was young (what really pisses me off is that I was named after a bloody footballer ).  When my daughter was born we named her "Catherine" -  we considered that it was an attractive, acceptable and distinctive name which had no negative social or cultural connotations.

Just as well your surname isn't De Rye, or JD Salinger would be suing you for copyright violation.

A probably apocryphal tale about a young couple who, shall we say, were less than fully educated, at the birth of their first child. They were still in the delivery suite, and having previously decided on a floral name for their new-born if it was a girl, which it was, they quickly discussed options after the midwife enquired if they had chosen a name for their daughter.

The new dad announced that he'd read something in the paper recently that contained a flowery-type name that sounded nice: 'Chlamydia' he announced, and the new mum thought that sounded lovely - the midwife had a quiet word with them (or so the story goes).
