The first sentence of the article:-

For the average person, stepping out with an elegant sun parasol in western society today would probably feel like stepping out in cosplay.

I bought my youngest a black lace parasol because she loved the one that Abby Sciuto had in N C I S, and it cost me £25 for the parasol and £80 in import charges!

It was used exclusively for cosplays like MCM at the O2 for about five years and is now carefully packed away for her daughter - if ever she gets around to having one!

Parasols date from when the last thing a well-bred young lady wanted was a tan: tans indicated that you were of the peasantry. Those of gentle birth were supposed to be pale and interesting. Now, everyone wants a tan - out of a bottle, if necessary - so I can't see them making a comeback.

That many people use bottle tan though I think is indicative that some of them are less likely to try and get a sun tan. Certainly that is the case for my wife. Both of use are pale but she doesn't tan rather burns even if wearing factor dufflecoat.

We lost a friend to skin cancer at the age of 28, and that was someone who didn't try and sun tan. Both of us will wear hats and be pretty well fully covered if lying in the sun whilst being sheltered by beach umbrellas. A nice parasol would be a good addition for walking about.
