Alistair Cooke's Letter From America was one of the longest running radio programmes in broadcasting history. For me, it was essential listening. I studied Politics in my first year at university, one of its components was a comparison between the nature and the operation of the British, American and Soviet constitutions - I missed Letter From America at my peril.
