From the standpoint of history, I think you can cut the Lib Dem part of the coalition some slack, now that we have ten years of experience of what it is like without their moderating influence.

Not going into coalition with the Tories could have been far more moderating and discarded or defeated Lib Dem policies would have had more of a chance.
