Song for Hollywood - "When will they ever learn"?

There are reasonable issues - I went to see Paul Schofield in black face playing Othello with an over the top accent and it was entirely questionable.

What I meant was that Hollywood, and the live theatre world, would have learned by now that using white actors to play non-white, regardless of the degree of non-white the character was/is. is rapidly becoming more and more unacceptable.

The worst ever case of 'whitewashing' that I can remember seeing in a film was John Wayne as Ghengis Khan!

It's a dreadful film but the issue here is that Cleopatra was not black so there is no whitewashing.

The Egyptology pages are normally infested with 'black supremacy' theorists - touting an ancient black superstate - despite all evidence to the contrary. They're now in meltdown. Thing is; if you really want to be a perfectionist, Kleopatra was not entirely Greek, if DNA from the remains identified as her sister Arsinoe are to be believed...there's a strong element of Egyptian blood there; so neither a black, nor, for that matter, a white, actrees, weould fit the bill.... Carry on, Cleo ....(or, more correctly, Kleo.....)

Othello was one of the set texts for my English O Level in the early eighties. We saw the Orson Wells film version as part of our studies. The make up was distracting even back then and even though the film was in black and white. I've got no objection to white people playing black people or vice versa but I think I'd find the suspension of disbelief easier without black face.

Already seen it suggested that for some the problem is not Gadot's colour but her religion. It's likely to get very ugly.

Is she a practising Jew? What religion should she be, bearing in mind that nobody today practises whatever religion Cleopatra might have followed?

I like the way they claim that Elizabeth Taylor provides the image that most of us have of Cleopatra. I'm pretty sure that, for English people, it's Amanda Barrie (https://images.app.goo.gl/LDwpuHXfQv4NmLBg9)

It's more that some people are saying that some of the attacks are being driven by anti semitism

She's an Israeli Jew, for heaven's sake, so she is from more or less the right area, and of more or less the right ethnicity. If they want to be really accurate, they should use a Greek actress.

It would probably change absolutely nothing if she could actually trace her family tree back to Cleopatra herself!
