A thread for all things Christmassy.
A little jingle to start you off:
Oh the virus outside is frightful,
But the wine is so delightful,
And as we've no place to go,
Let it flow,
Let it flow,
Let it flow.

There must be something we can do with 'Deck the halls'.

An Anglican priest friend of our vicar daughter sent me this it made me giggle. ;D
Good king Wenceslas
Good King Wenceslas looked out
On the Feast of Stephen
A neighbour shopped him to the police
Now he plans to get even
The party wasn’t all that large
Twenty at the most
But he still had to pay the fine
So now that neighbour’s to-as-st
Leave it dear the queen had said
It’s hardly worth the trouble
Put down your binoculars
And join the family bubble
Stuff and nonsense , said the king
He took me for a fool
Look! There he is- I’ve got him now
He’s stealing all our fu-uu-el
Good king Wenceslas looked out
As the police descended
He saw his neighbour wood in hand
Quickly apprehended
The moral of this story is
Be kind to those next door
Especially when they are the King
And in charge of the la-aa-aw

Sainsbury's ad upsetting people
https://metro.co.uk/2020/11/17/black-people-in-a-sainsburys-christmas-advert-shouldnt-make-you-angry-13608767/

I've seen that advert a few times & didn't think twice about it except that it's pleasant. Wassamatta with some people?
-
We don't watch ads, but for sick white supremacists to make an issue out of it because black people are featured, just shows them up if be the evil creeps thy are. >:(

It's easy to think of people like this as 'white supremacists' but it's often more just people who feel as if their lives are getting worse because of the actions of what they see as an 'elite'. And it's the same as drives some Trump supporters and some Brexiteers. Dismissing all of them as white supremacists, or fascist, or racist is just lazy and dangerous othering.

You are making excuses for their behaviour, imo!

Is this not another case of the voices of the vocal few hiding the acceptance of the silent majority?
The one's who are bitching the "unpleasant" drown out the hundreds who are accepting!
I think it might be LR's use of the term "elite" that is in error that the effect of the "few" which might be a more appropriate appellation.

I didn't read it in quite that way.
Sounded more like that if we want to solve the huge problem of the forces that drive white supremacism we have to start to acknowledge and challenge some of the factors that allow these movements to flourish. Things don't happen in isolation.

Recognising that things are complex isn't excusing the behaviour.

To an extent, I agree. But the issue here is that it's not simply 'white supremacist' which is a very specific grouping, and that if you want to deal with the issues then you don't just call people names. Millions voted for Brexit 'to take back control' and some of the them would see this as a lack of control. Most of these people seem to be more scared than supremacist.
Not sure what your point on 'elite' is - as it was me who used the term not LR.

What nonsense. They hate a charming, rather touching advert because the characters are black. That is racism, pure and simple. Your use of non-words such as "othering" gets pretty tiresome, as well.

They may well be racist but they are not all white supremacists. The dismissing of everyone who disagrees with you in these lazy terms is counterproductive and naive.

I wonder if people who indulge in othering people are a bunch of Otherf****rs.

The ever-reliable Tom Lehrer:
Christmas time is here, by golly
Disapproval would be folly
Deck the halls with hunks of holly
Fill the cup and don't say when
Kill the turkeys, ducks and chickens
Mix the punch, drag out the Dickens
Even though the prospect sickens
Brother, here we go again
On Christmas Day you can't get sore
Your fellow man you must adore
There's time to rob him all the more
The other three hundred and sixty-four
Relations, sparing no expense, 'll
Send some useless old utensil
Or a matching pen and pencil
("Just the thing I need, how nice!")
It doesn't matter how sincere it
Is, nor how heart felt the spirit
Sentiment will not endear it
What's important is the price
Hark, the Herald Tribune sings
Advertising wondrous things
God rest ye merry merchants
May ye make the Yuletide pay
Angels we have heard on high
Tell us to go out and – buy!

I saw that ad earlier, gravy etc, and honestly have no idea why anyone would be upset about it.
