Easyjet will start charging people to use the overhead lockers. According to the BBC, the reaction on Twitter is pretty negative. I'm thinking: fantastic.

What is the problem with overhead lockers?

What is the problem with overhead lockers?
People use them instead of putting their luggage in the hold. That means getting on a plane takes longer whilst people stand in the aisles manhandling impossibly heavy bags into the lockers. Getting off a plane takes longer because people stand in the aisles manhandling impossibly heavy bags out of the lockers. If you get on early and you sit in the aisle seat, your knee is constantly hammered by people dragging around impossibly heavy bags. The last person on the plane gets into a massive strop because there's no room for their bag which has to be put into the hold as a result. You can't move in the airport because people are dragging around impossibly heavy bags instead of doing the sensible thing and letting the baggage handlers put them in the hold. Queues at security will move quicker because there will be fewer bags to X-ray.
From my point of view, there is no down side to this.

Of course there is a downside to this.
One of the main reasons people want only to have cabin baggage, particularly for short trips, is so they don't have to wait ages to drop off their bags and longer again to pick them up at the other end. You will now have to pay for the privilege of doing so, and this is basically just a price hike as you have to pay for hold baggage already so the only way you can avoid this cost is to bring a tiny bag that fits under a seat, likely too small for a weekend trip etc.
Also if you have long legs having a bag under the seat in front of you is a nightmare.
Finally I you are wrong on the number of bags going through security. Currently on Easyjest you are only allowed one cabin bag - that won't change, so just as many bags going through the x-ray, just mainly smaller ones. In fact you may well get more bags - if you are a couple you currently may just take on standard cabin size bag between you. With this rule, to save a few £s you'll take two smaller bags.
Rubbish idea - and don't forget the original view from the low cost airlines on charging for hold baggage is that it costs more to deal with them - of course it does, they are handled by the airline and ground crew from when you drop off to when you pick up. Cabin bags are entirely dealt with by the passenger, start to finish.
