Well certainly an enormously complex man with some horrible aspects that we all might have shared at the time. The whole issue of the question is that Jefferson was seen as enlightened for the time, yet owned 600 slaves and is believed to have had a relationship with Sallie Hemmings that started when he was 44 and she was 14, and his slave.

The whole world view and context were different then. The trouble is many of the primitive and incorrect ideas on race and eugenics persist today.

Perhaps the issue with this idea is not so much the simple idea of racism but the calm rationalism of coming up with such an equation. That rationalism is something that haunts the idea of 'eugenics' as science. Indeed I am reminded of the Wannsee conference with its project manager mentality
