I think this is a mistake and his comparisons don't work as when it comes to straight roles casting is effectively sexuality blind. If it is then just about authenticity rather than opportunity, then he would have to argue that straight roles are only played by straighy people.

I saw an article and some letters about this in METRO on my way to my eye clinic appointment this morning and had to keep the paper until after the appointment in order to confirm I had actually seen what I thougfht I saw.
A lot of responants - all anti his comments and giving him well deserved rice!

It seemed on odd thing for him to say, given that arguably his best series Queer as folk had the three main gay characters played by straight actors. Very convincingly I might add.
I think James Dreyfuss' comments on this are very pertinent.
