First female winning jockey (well apart from Velvet Brown, if they hadn't disqualified her)

She's a great jockey - and has been for quite some time now. Her riding at Cheltenham this year was remarkable, and I just hope they drop the patronising 'female jockey' label now.

Not to forget that she rides mainly for one of the best trainers in Ireland.

Just been reading, in the 'New European' and online, about the Duke of Albuquerque, the Jimmy Hill lookalike and Spanish aristocrat who rode in the GN seven times in the 70s, never coming close to winning and breaking most of the bones in his body. What a nutcase/hero!

Why should the sex of the jockey make any difference in the way in which a horse runs?

After all, it's the horse that does the hard work. I cannot conceive any way in which the sex of the rider is an important factor in winning a horse race. To me, this appears to just another way in which women have been discriminated against for purely arbitrary reasons.
