An entertaining rundown of the many (and there have been very many) actors who have played Sherlock Holmes in some form or another on screen (TV & Film).
I can't really argue with the number 1 slot, although I do think Peter Cushing should have been a tad higher in the placings:

Pretty reasonable list. My favourite is Robert Stephens, then Christopher Plummer - both in odd flawed films.
If it went to radio portrayals, Clive Merrison was great, and played Holmes in every story about him.

Of course the correct answer is Basil Rathbone.
Great name

Sorry, but I agree with the number One as listed, Jeremy Brett.

I agree he is almost unbeatable

He carries No 1 (I M H O) because he appeared in just about every Holmes story, not just one or two, and they were all Conan Doyle's work, not just any writer who had an idea for a film script or TV series using their version of Holmes. Some of these bore as much resemblance to Doyle's detective as Boris Johnson does to Albert Einstein.

Actually, I wouldn't have put Basil Rathbone so high up the list, especially if fidelity to the source material is considered. In fact the Holmes stereotype is more Rathbone than Doyle and many of the other actors listed were playing Rathbone, not Holmes. Jeremy Brett is far closer to the spirit of the original writing.
On the other hand, I note that both Will Ferrell and Johnny Depp are further down the list than Bernie Winters playing Holmes on 3-2-1. I'll never be watching those films.

My favourite screen Holmes is Douglas Wilmer, for the illogical reason that he was the first for me, in my early teens. I'm glad he was placed high. I'dn't've put Bendydick Cucumberpatch so high; I found him rather annoying.

I like Jeremy Brett. I liked Benedict Cumberbatch too, thought his portrayal of Holmes was authentic despite the series being set in thhe present day.

No. The same IQ as a cowpat when compared to Einstein!

I never saw B C as his appearance was after I gave up TV.
