Was never a great Monkees fan but some of their stuff has worn quite well - I heard Pleasant Valley Sunday the other day, and its not bad at all.

I've always liked his solo record 'Rio' - so I thank him for that.

Was never a great Monkees fan.
I gather the same applied to Mike Nesmith.

Very sad news.

I remember the Monkees from my childhood. I'd have been 9 or 10 when they exploded onto our screens.

The songs were pure pop of course, which some like to sneer at, but I defy anyone not to sing a long with the lines:

Cheer up, Sleepy Jean
Oh, what can it mean
To a daydream believer
And a homecoming queen

And it may be just me, but this song for reasons I can't quite identify provokes both a smile and tears from me. A happy/sad song if you will.

Nesmith showed his own skills as a songwriter with "Listen to the Band"  towards the end of their initial recording career, which has always impressed me.
