Title: Who's who?
Post by: Steve H on April 05, 2022, 10:41:14 PM
Well, if it's not going t be Hugh Ggrant, who is it likely t be, and who would you like it to be?
Here's a slightly left-field idea: Meera Syal! An older, Asian female Doctor: why not? When I suggested her on a Dr Who fan group on Farcebook, I was mocked to the echo, but I still think she'd be great. Any more ideas?

I don't understand why anybody would mock Meera Syal. Any good actor could play the part and we've now established that the doctor can be a woman. Mocking Meera Seyal is dangerously close to racism, if not wallowing right in it.

Yes, she would be great, Sanjeev Bhaskar her husband would be fine too.

Obviously, there are loads of others, all ages, sexes, colours and shapes .. not sure it's worth speculating?

Eddie Izzard perhaps? Outfit choice(s) could be interesting!

Richard Ayoade, maybe he could channel a Patrick Troughton vibe which would be no bad thing imo.

This is a list of potential replacements. As noted in the article some, like Olly A. have already ruled themselves out:

https://www.whattowatch.com/features/doctor-who-14th-doctor-who-will-replace-jodie-whittaker

The only one I definitely wouldn't want is Lydia West, she is too young (in my mind) and although she is clearly a favourite of RTD I was distinctly underwhelmed by her in both It's a Sin & Years & Years (the TV drama not the group!). I will admit this may just be one of my irrational dislikes, she is in good company - David Jason & Tom Hanks please shut up.

Agree with Seb Toe a Patrick Troughton vibe would be an excellent thing, although whether it would work or even be considered acceptable in NuWho is another matter entirely.

Michael Sheen or Richard Ayoade would be good.

I'm one story, Survival, away from completing a rewatch of classic Who, and I would be another to like a Troughton vibe, though Matt Smith did try for a bit of that. His try seemed to me more about mannerisms because for me what Troughton did well is almost act from the side of things. He didn't take centre stage so much. It's difficult to see if someone else could do that because I am not sure how you would know. I guess what I am wanting is a good Iago and that's hard to see in most people. Of the people in the list provided TV, I would probably lean to Jo Martin.

I quite like Steve's suggestion of Meera Syal. I think linking in with the good Iago, you want a not quite lead actor, that can drip with intelligence. I would suggest Mark Bonnar but that maybe too many Scots.

Well, "mocked to the echo" is perhaps an exaggeration, but it was felt that she's too old - she's 61, which is younger than Peter Capaldi, but older than he was when he took over the role, and she would thus be the oldest-ever Doctor at the start of their stint.
Saw the Easter edition on iplayer the other day: not bad, but not great.

Why not? The Doctor already became a bird. Why not another one?

As I pointed out in reply 7, it was her age they were questioning, not her sex - nor her race, for that matter.

I hated Sex Education but not for him, rather the awfully mannered writing. So I only lasted 2 episodes. Not seen him in anything else.

Probably only for a special but still welcome.

That's a brilliant tease from RTD. And of all the companions in the NuWho, Donna is my favourite, though I will happily admit to being worried when Catherine Tate was announced originally.

I agree with that. I think it worked so well precisely because the love quotient was dialed down.

Not just that but worked as good as any companion relationship

Donna was a sort of grown-up version of Lauren "I ain't bovvered" Cooper. I loved her.

You don't need the question mark and everything after it.

The rest is just parameters to track where you came from and other advertising options.

Someone pointed out on Farcebook that Ncuti Gatwa is not, in fact, the first black Doctor: that was Jo Martin as the "fugitive Doctor".
