One of those lists where I feel they are trying a bit too hard.

I am inc;ined to agree. The list is of musical mainly written for the cinema (The Merry Widow is an exception).
It omits musicals written for the theatre by Jerome Kern and Rodgers & Hart. Among other things, R&H wrote the first musical inspired by Shakespeare, The Boys from Syracuse, and On Your Toes the first musical in which dance was used to advance the plot
