Excellent news. I've long thought that all speed limits should be reduced.

We are OK where I live. We've got the latest traffic calming system. I think it's called Potholes.

I'm conflicted on this - as a resident in a fairly rural area, I get the need for people to slow down within the small towns and villages, but as someone that needs to travel extensively through those areas further slowing long journeys is an absolute ball-ache.
It is convenience vs safety to an extent, but the problem wasn't people complying with the old speed limits, it was people failing to do so. They're typically failing to comply with the new ones, too, but by lowering the limit they've lowered the overall speed. It's made people safer, and that's undoubtedly a good thing, but I can't help but feel that people who were driving safely before are being punished along with the rest by slower journey times.

I'm all in favour of 20mph provided it is targeted well. I certainly think that most residential roads in towns/cities etc should be 20 rather than 30.
Where I am there are some bizarre proposals, under the auspices of significant roll out of 20mph. Much is made in the publicity of the number of roads that will now be 20mph, but the choice it perplexing. The most crazy examples being several short cut de sacs, probably only about 50m long which are designated 20mph, but the road they come off, which is residential, has shops, churches, children's nurseries etc remains 30. Frankly it would be pretty well impossible for anyone to break 20mph, let alone 30 on the cut de sac roads.

The trouble is that it is not at all thought out.

Rural France, where I am at present, seems to be moving to 30kph as standard through villages and it is becoming very common in town centres. The enforcement method favoured here is speed bumps.
