Title: AI facial recognition: Campaigners and MPs call for ban

The ban is more to do with a gut reaction than to any issue with the principle imo. And any ban is going to be window dressing.

I really don't think they should be linking it to the passport database.

Because it means that the police could keep tabs on anybody who has a passport. It's a massive invasion of privacy.

Allowing the access to the database doesn't mean they are keeping tabs on everyone who has a passport. You are objecting to a possible use, not the access itself.

And the proposed ban is far wider than this specific question.

Damn right I am. I do not trust the police not to use the powers we give them to the fullest extent they can.

Indeed. It's probably necessary. I'm absolutely fine with the police using facial recognition for finding fugitives and people for whom they have an arrest warrant. No problem with that at all, but what about using facial recognition to monitor anybody who has a criminal record? Is that OK? I don't think so.

And again having access to the database in itself doesn't mean that will happen.
