Difficult to work out how much this is 'AI' and how much it's an issue with voice recognition software, or indeed just with normal software bugs

If voice recognition software was invented today, it would definitely be called AI. AI has just become a marketing buzzword for a number of different but related technologies.

That said, it's astonishing that IBM can't make voice recognition software that can tell the difference between "butter" and "caramel ice cream". I suspect there is more going on than the BBC's surface level treatment of the story.
